Modeling Host-Microbial Interactions

Microbes can contribute to host growth, development, intra-/inter-species interactions and evolution, and germ-free model organisms can facilitate detailing these contributions. Germ-free invertebrate model systems are especially useful in these studies as they can be highly cost-effective without sacrificing data quality. Furthermore, uncovering how microbial symbionts have parallel impacts on invertebrates and vertebrates can highlight how microbes have been integral to multicellular life.
