Abstract:
Synchrotron facilities provide extremely bright x-ray sources for a wide range of measurements across numerous fields. A brief overview of x-ray measurement types at synchrotrons will be discussed for context, including protein crystallography and x-ray computed tomography. This seminar will highlight tissue-scale x-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging of plant and animal specimens at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), including applications in fundamental research questions surrounding metal uptake, transport, and metabolism by plants and animals; as well as broader environmental issues such as heavy metal exposure and effects of climate change on ecosystem health.
