The Tragedy of the Commons (Hardin 1968) is a situation where individual users of a shared natural resource act in their own best interest and often contrary to the common good, resulting in a depletion of those resources. The Tragedy, as it relates to thepublic trust marine resources of the State of North Carolina, will be the focus of this discussion. Specifically, the over-capacity in our fisheries coupled with inadequate regulations to control harvest to insure sustainability and healthy ecosystems will be reviewed along with potential solutions to address the problem.
