Abstract:

Tef (Eragrostis tef) is the most important cereal crop in the Horn of Africa, especially in Ethiopia and Eritrea, where it has been believed to be a staple for about 6000 years. It is becoming popular in the Western world for its nutritious and healthy grains. Over the last 5 years, the Osena lab has been studying tef genetic variability in mineral content and bioavailability, antioxidant properties, genomics and transgenic studies to decipher the genetic mechanism of enhanced mineral accumulation in tef. In this seminar, I will be presenting the current progress of the Osena Lab and future directions. The overarching gool of the Osena Lab is to improve the nutritional quality, health benefits and abiotic stress resilience of tef and major crops using biotechnologies.
