The tales teeth tell: Using dental histology to explore vertebrate life histories

Event Series (See All)

September 10 @ 3:30 pm 4:30 pm

Anne Marie Sohler-Snoddy

Speaker: Anne Marie Sohler-Snoddy

Visiting From: University of North Carolina Greensboro

Topic: The tales teeth tell: Using dental histology to explore vertebrate life histories

Host: Malcolm Schug

The formation of dental tissues follows a rhythmic developmental chronology, and, unlike bone and soft tissues, in humans and many other mammals they do not remodel during life. A wealth of information about an individual’s life-course from gestation to the completion of tooth development can be unlocked through dental histology, including survived episodes of physiological stress and periods of nutritional deficiency. This seminar will provide an introduction to dental histology and highlight some of its applications for understanding stress and resilience in vertebrate populations, past and present.

This seminar will be held in person and shared through Microsoft Teams. Parking is available in the McIver Street Parking Deck.
