Intestinal Stem Cells:

We have discovered a large population of intestinal stem cells (ISCs) that continuously regenerate the midgut epithelium of honey bees. These cells are very proliferative throughout the adult life of queens, workers and drones.

Thanks to grants from NAPPC and NCBC we could pursue the subject of intestinal health of honey bees more generally in collaboration with Susan Fahrbach. After the establishment of permanent cell cultures derived from the intestinal stem cells has failed, we focus on in-vivo use of the ISCs as bee health indicators. We have tested the influence of different diets and sublethal effects pesticides but we are interested in developing this system further as a health indicator and also in studying more fundamental aspects of ISC biology.
