Biology Department Commencement 2009 Ceremony (Photos)
The UNCG Biology Department Commencement Ceremony was held on Thursday, May 14, 2009, at the Taylor Theatre on the UNCG campus. Undergraduate degrees were awarded to fifty students, and seven students received the Master of Science degree. Michelle McQuage and Meghan Fitzgerald, representatives of the National Honor Society in Biology, read the names of graduates as they received their diplomas from Dr. Stan Faeth, the Head of the Biology Department, and Dr. Parke Rublee, who also gave the commencement address.
Dr. Karen Katula, Chairman of Graduate Studies, presented the Teaching Assistant Excellence Award to Julie McKee Underwood and the Graduate Student Association Certificate to Avik Mukherjee.
Six undergraduate degree recipients were named Eberhart Award winners: Megan Allred; Maja Herco; Amanda Liss; Mohammed Rasool; Amy Roop, and McKenzie Smith. The Eberhart Award was established in 1997 by the family of Dr. Bruce M. Eberhart (who was Department Head from 1963 to 1979) to honor his memory and legacy. Each year, Eberhart Award winners are those who embody the spirit of Dr. Eberhart – students who are academically excellent, actively involved in research, and contribute to the department, university, or community as a whole; serving as models for what we wish all of our students could be. The awards were presented by Dr. Robert Stavn on behalf of the Eberhart Awards committee, which also included Mrs. Robin Maxwell.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the Syngenta Lobby of the Sullivan Science Building.
